Pompeii, Italy: a plaster body cast of a pregnant woman protecting her unborn child from the volcanic eruption. This is how her body was found.
I just came across this photo while looking for images to upload and instantly remembered the guide telling us that this woman was in this position when she died, attempting to protect her baby from the destruction of Pompeii. It is so touching and haunting and vulnerable all at the same time. Amazing how someone’s actions from 79 A.D. can still affect you today.
